Every Civil War uniform has a specific design enabling each branch of service to be easily recognizable from another. Federal uniforms are either a formal uniform or dress coat; a short army shell jacket suited to mounted branches, light artillery and cavalry; or untailored fatigue coat for everyday duty. The shell jacket sports red wool taping to distinguish the uniform as artillery and yellow trim to identify a trooper as a cavalryman. These dashing jackets portray a flair that is typical of mid-nineteenth century American military fashion.
