More than 50,000 soldiers undergo surgery to remove battle damaged limbs. An astounding three-quarters of all battlefield surgeries are amputations, which is the treatment of preference for such injuries. Surgeons operate for days at a time as the flood of wounded soldiers pours into the surgical tent. Those who survive the surgery must then deal with the psychological and physical impact of their newfound disability as they return to civilian life.
