Although only comprised of one ounce of soft metal, bullets fired during the Civil War are responsible for 90% of wounds and deaths. Eighty-seven percent of abdominal wounds are fatal and soldiers with head injuries, especially the brain, did not typically survive. The medical record of the Civil War is full of cases noting the damage inflicted by bullets. The collection of data from observations and procedures used during the conflict broadens our understanding of the body, medicine and technology.
