As war begins, Union and Confederate armies organize systems to care for those wounded in battle. Each regiment includes a team of surgeons as well as men assigned as stretcher bearers. Front line dressing stations provide critical care. Thereafter, soldiers are transported to a battlefield hospital. Once stabilized, the wounded move on to a general hospital where more proper medical care is provided. The experience of being wounded in battle is unique for every individual and something that remains with the soldier for a lifetime.
