A quarter of a million Confederate soldiers serve time in Federal prisoner of war camps during the Civil War. Men like Captain William Cox of the 9th Missouri Infantry, a professional artist, make keepsakes that provide an intimate look at prison life. Cox, Sergeant Thomas Dashiell of the 9th Virginia and many others are exchanged for captured Union prisoners and continue to fight or return home as free men. Battle and imprisonment take their toll, but these men serve their cause with courage.
