The Civil War soldier is equipped with a variety of gear. To track equipment, some soldiers mark each item with their name and regimental designation. The equipment carried is heavy as can be seen upon examination of the sweat-stained backpack strap of William Brumbaugh. This eighteen-year-old marches off to war with the 64th Ohio, but returns with much of his military gear. Modern historians can retrace the steps of soldiers like William through these inanimate objects.
