By the third day of July 1863, thousands of men lay lifeless on the fields of Gettysburg. Among them is 19-year-old Lieutenant William Fisher. After risking their lives to carry the dying officer to safety, fellow soldiers later bury Fisher. Their careful preservation and labeling of his body make it possible for the young man’s father to find and return his son home for burial. Most of Gettysburg’s dead are not as fortunate.
